[Tutorial] Kruikenzak naaien - How to sew a hot water bottle cover
I showed a recycled hot water bottle cover before. Here follows the tutorial to make one.
It's a cover for a 'clasic', metal hot water bottle. One you put in de crib with the baby. It's an ideal recycle project. For example you can use an old towel for the inner bag. You don't need much fabric.
Dit heb je nodig:
This is what you need:
Zo maak je de zak:
This is how you make the cover:
1. Double fold the ribbon (if you're using a ribbon with a 'right' and a 'wrong' side, fold with the right sides togheter) and put it on de side of the outher fabric, at about 5 cm (2 inch) from the top, on the right side of the fabric.
2. Fold the fabric lengthways, right sides together.
3. Sew the side and bottom.
6. Stik de zijkent en de onderkant dicht.
4. If you want to use a label, place it on the inner fabric, the same way you placed the ribbon on the outher fabric. Place it about 2 or 3 cm (about 1 inch) from the top.
5. Fold the fabric lengthways, right sides together.
6. Sew the side and bottom.
7. Place the covers into each other, wrong sides and sideseams together.
8. If you want to, you can sew the top of both covers, use about 0,5 cm (1/5 inch) seamallowence.
9. Sew the biastape on top of the cover. How to sew on biastape, you can find here.
Slide the hot water bottle into the cover and admire your work.
NB.
Note. Always folow the instructions on the bottle (or as given to you by a maternity nurse) for filling and placing the bottle! Be sure the bottle doesn't leak and the baby can't burn itself to the bottle.

- 35 cm biaisband
- 50 cm lint
This is what you need:
- 2 pieces of fabric, 30 cm x 37 cm (12 inch x 14,5 inch). You can use all kinds of fabric. The inner cover mostly is made of terry. The cover has to be thick enough so the baby doesn't burn itself, but thin enough to let the warmth of the bottle come trough. In this tutorial I use tricot for the outside and terry for the inside.
- 35 cm (14 inch) biastape
- 50 cm (19,5 inch) ribbon

[Tutorial] Twee zij-plooitjes worden stolpplooi - Change two side pleats into one box pleat
When I was planning to make the Ethan shirt for the daughter, I immediatly knew I was going to replace the two side pleats for a boxpleat. To do this, I changed the pattern and the steps for sewing the back onto the back yoke. In this tutorial I describe how to do this.
1. Trace the pattern, or use the printed pattern. If you use the printed pattern, don't cut it out yet. Also trace the marks for the (side) pleats.
2. Measure the distance between the pleat marks. I will refer to this distance as pleat distance.
3a. To draw the pleat, there was made more room at the shoulder seam. Measure the pleat distance, starting at the side seam on the shoulder, going inside. Mark this spot.
3b. Redraw the armhole, starting from the mark you pointed out in step 3a.
3c. Your new armhole has to be as large as the original one. Check this with your tape measure.
4. The boxpleat will be at the center back. Draw a strip on center back (top to bottom) as wide as the pleat distance. Mark the original center back and the new center back.
b. Het punt waar eerst middenachter zat.
c. De nieuwe middenachterlijn.
5. Use the following marks:
a. The left mark of the two marks which marked the original side pleat. This mark will match the mark on the back yoke.
b. The original spot of center back
c. The new center back
6. Knip het patroon uit je stof. De (nieuwe) middenachterlijn uiteraard op de stofvouw.
6. With the new center back on fold, cut the pattern out of the fabric.
When you get to making the pleats and stich the back yoke on the back, in your sewing process, do as follows (and do not follow your description for a short time).
1. Fold the back, right sides together, match the boxpleat marks (5b). Iron the fold.
2. Stitch, starting at the mark, approx 1 to 2 cm (3/8 to 6/8 inch) down, parrallel with the fold.
3. Vouw het achterpand open. Strijk de stolpplooi.
3. Lay out the back and iron the pleat.
4. Stitch a horizontal line, parrallel with the top of the back, approx 0,5 cm (1/8 inch) from the edge.
5. The boxpleat is finished. Follow your pattern instructions for stitching the back yoke on the back. The center of the boxpleat is the center of the back, now. The marks you made at 5a are matching the marks on the back yoke.

[Tutorial] Kraag veranderen - Change the collar
I showed my daughters new shirt earlier. I did mention I made some adjustments, including adjusting the collar. In this tutorial I describe how to change a collar. Starting with the adjustments in the pattern, ending with the adjustments in the sewing process.
It's possible to alter the collar in different ways. Just keep one thing in mind: Don't change the bottom of the collar. If you do so, it might not fit to the stand (or neck, if there isn't a (loose) stand). The width and shape of the collar can be changed. For my Etana shirt I made a round collar. Therefore I drew a round shape, inside the original tip of the collar (see picture above, the red line is the new tip).
Folow the steps in your sewing description. Put the collar together as described. If you made a round collar, like I did, trim the seamallowance with pinking shears or make notches, before turning the collar right side out.
Sew your collar on your garment, as described in the sewing description. Admire your work, you're finished!

[Tutorial] Zij- en binnenzak toevoegen aan rugtas - Add side and innerpocket to backpack
It has been a while since I made the backpack. Meanwhile it has had a great time at school and the daughter is very satisfied whit it. Becouse she likes pockets, I added pockets to the backpack. Including two sidepockets and one innerpocket. In this tutorial I describe how I did it. I made the pockets to the Toddler backpack of Made By Rae, so the measurements fit to this pattern.
For the side pockets you need:
Lay out the pocket pieces, right sides together and sew, using a seamallowence of 1 cm.
Knip de naadwaarde bij.
Cut the seamallowence.
Fold, right sides turend outside and iron the hem.
Make a tunnel of 1 cm wide.
Thread the elastic trough the tunnel, using a safety pin.
Pin the end, before it disappears in the tunnel.
Thread the elastic further trough the tunnel and pin the other end to secure.
Lay the pocket on the side piece and pin.
Put extra pins trought the elastic, so it sticks in place, when sewing.
I made pleats in the pocket and sewed it on. Leave the extra pins in the elastic, until you're done sewing the pocket.
Et voila, het zakje is klaar.
Et voila, the pocket is finished.
I made the inner pocket the same way. Only for this pocket, I used one piece of fabric 35 cm wide and 36 cm high. I put fusable interfacing on half of this piece (35 cm wide, 18 cm high). I folded the piece in half and ironed it. I made a tunnel en threaded the elastic trough, like I described before. I wrinkled the bottom of this piece, so it became as wide as the back of the backpack.
Sew the piece onto the right side of the lining backpiece.
En voila, ook deze zak is klaar ;)
Et voila, this pocket also is finished ;)

After almost one week at school the backpack is still alive :). As I showed before I added a few pockets. One of them is the Add-a-pocket of Sherri from Thread Riding Hood. I added a ruffle to the flap of this pocket. In this tutorial, I describe how I did it.
Wat je nodig hebt:
I didn't take picuters of every step, but it isn't very hard. Follow steps 1 to 3 of Sherri's tutorial. Make hems (about 1 cm / 0,5 inch) on the short ends of the ruffle. Fold the ruffle in half, length wise and iron. Wrinkle at the open side. Put the ruffle on the right side of the outher part of the flap, along the side the sides and bottom of the flap. Put the closed side of the ruffle inside the flap. The ends of the ruffle are about 1 cm / 0,5 inch below the upper side of the flap. This is the seam allowance when sewing the flap. Place the elastic in place where indicated. (see photo above)
Follow the other steps of Sherri's tutorial. You can skip step 5, as the elastic is in place already. When sewing the upper side of the flap, keep in mind not to sew the ruffle in the hem. After turning the flap, it looks like the flap in the picture above.
After almost one week at school the backpack is still alive :). As I showed before I added a few pockets. One of them is the Add-a-pocket of Sherri from Thread Riding Hood. I added a ruffle to the flap of this pocket. In this tutorial, I describe how I did it.
- Thread Riding Hoods tutorial (including the required fabrics, the button and the elastic)
- An extra fabric strip. I wanted to have two right sides on the ruffle, and quite a large ruffle. So the strip I used was about 10 cm / 4 inch high. That's 2 x 4 cm / 1,5 inch (the finished length of the ruffle) + 2 x 1 cm / 0,5 inch (the seam allowance). The length depends on how full you want your ruffle to be. The longer the strip, the fuller the ruffle. The length of the strip I made was 1,5 times the lengths of the sides and bottom of the flap. That's about 53 cm / 21 inch

R14D #1: [Tutorial] Wijnglas onderzetters - Wine coasters
Boomie organizes 14 days of recyling (I abbreviated it to R14D), starting at November 17 until November 30. I cheated a little, by makeing some recycle projects in de passed weeks. The next 14 days I'll try to blog only about recycling... My first project is little and easy, ideal for using up some scraps: Wine coasters.
Recognize this? You're throwing a (garden) party, all wine glasses are the same. Eventually the partygoers can't find their own glass anymore (not becouse they are drunk, but becouse all glasses are the same). These coasters are the solution to this problem. They also protect te table as they catch the spilling winedrops. The idea for these coasters I found, via Pinterest, here. There wasn't a description of how to make them. So I figured it out myself, and made a tutorial of it.
All you need are five circles, with a 1cm wider radius (Maths: the radius is half the diameter) as the radius of the foot of the wineglass. Use thin fabrics. When you use a thicker fabric for the bottom circle, the wineglass will not be very stable...
6. De onderzetter is klaar.
1. Fold four circles in half and iron them. 2. Place the four folded circles on the fifth circle. One half circle overlaps another one. Pin them. 3. Sew, using a small seamallowence, like 0,5 cm. 4. Cut off the seamallowence with pinking shears or make notches. 5. Turn the coaster trough the hole between the half circles. 6. The coaster is finished.
Now you can put it on a wineglass. I struggled a bit doing this, but it works. It might be easier to use knits. I'll try this later.
Proost!
Make different coasters, so no-one will lose his glass! Chears!
