Een overall werd tuinbroek - a overall turned into a dungeree

Before he was born, his mother (my sister) made an order. 'If the baby is a boy, would you sew a overall for his first birthday?' Ofcourse I would, I even would if it is a girl. Well, the baby appeared to be a boy and at the beginning of February he turned one year already. In October I asked the mom if the overall was still on the wish-list. It was. But, could I make some changes?

No sleeves, but shoulder straps, so you won't have to puzzle with the zipper.

No round knee pads, but rectangular pads, in which you could put pads, just like daddy does.

En een hamerlus en een duimstok zak.

And a hammer loop and a pocket for a ruler.

En een grote zak van voren.

And a large pocket on the front.

Yeah, no problem. I altered the Carpenter from Homemade Mini Couture. With the mommy I chose some suitable fabric and went to work. I made a muslin first and altered the back afterwards. While sewing this one, I could use the experience I gained while sewing a Bas. The mommy chose some sturdy closures, which finishes him nicely: a sturdy dungeree in which M happily can play outside and helps his daddy :) M is one year old now, I sewed up a size 3 so he can enjoy this dungeree for a while.

Wat je voor je kinderen over hebt - The things we do for our kids

Two years ago I had a cheep buy with a piece of corduroy. I immediatly knew what I would make with it: A Bas for S.The project was delayed, but finished now eventually.

I'm a fan of the Zonen09 patterns. I like the retro-look with a modern twist. Despite I didn't sew much of  them (1 Jacob and 1 Bas), I admire them for a while now. There are just always other projects that seem to get more priority. Billie is waiting next, but that would be for one of the sisters first, I think.

In contrast to Jacob, which was a quick sew, Bas needs more patience. I even had to thread (by hand)! And, I hated that when I learned to sew and I still do. This is one of those things you do for your kids, I guess. But I'm thinking of a way to skip the threading next time. I intended to follow the instructions step by step, to get a nice end result. I think this was succesful... OK, I had to iron Bas before taking pictures, but you can see trough that, don't you?

I realy love the details, like the crosswise shoulder belts, which start in the side seam.

(Tja...)

Or the hidden pocket! Note to myself: Don't toutch the velcro with the iron!

Altough I wanted to be nice and follow the instructions, I didn't fully follow them. The buckles I had in mind didn't go trough the loops on the dungaree. The lady in the fabric store was very helpful and came up with these suspender buckles. Great! S can put this dungarees on easialy. The tape I used for the shoulder belts is to thin, I guess. The slide came down while wearing this dungarees. So I secured the belt with a little stitch (yeah, by hand...).

S didn't want me to take a picture of him with his Bas, but I did ;). I made Bas in size 3 width and size 4 length. While transfering the pattern I had to puzzle a bit, but I'm happy with the result. It fits nice and has some room to grow. S is very happy with his Bas and calls it his working trousers. Maybe I make an other one for him. Just see how I can skip the threading... And I won't use this tape for the shoulder belts.
