Bedding for a little friend

Z had een plan. Samen met papa had ze van restjes steigerhout een bed gemaakt voor haar favoriete knuffel (deze knuffel heeft ooit de naam 'Roze Knuffel' gekregen, want ja, hij is roze...). Nu ging ze zelf beddengoed maken voor dit bed. Mama kon vast wel even helpen. Ze koos zelf stofjes uit (je kent ze vast nog wel). Mama ging aan de slag met de maten en tekende vierkanten op de stof, die Z netjes uitknipte. We recykleerden nog meer: een oude handdoek werd gebruikt als vulling voor de deken, resten afzuigkapfilter werden gebruikt voor het matrasje.

Z had a plan. She made a bed from leftovers scaffolding wood with daddy for her favorite cuddly toy (listening to the name Roze Knuffel, which is Dutch for Pink Cuddly Toy, 'couse, yes, he is pink...). Now she would make bedding. Mommy sure would hepl her. She chose the fabric her self (maybe you remember them). Mommy drew some squares on the fabric, Z cutted them out. We recycled an old towel for the blanket and pieces of hood filter for the mattress.

Z had bedacht dat de verschillende zijden van het beddengoed anders moesten zijn. Zo kan Roze Knuffel elke dag in een ander bedje liggen, als hij dat wil... Ik bedacht dat ik de keergaten niet met de hand dicht wilde naaien, dus stikte ik alles smal op de kant door.

Z tought each side of each bedding piece had to be made of a differend fabric. This way Roze Knuffel has a differend bed every day... I didn't want to close the turning holes by hand, so I stiched every piece on the edge.  

Roze Knuffel vind het allemaal prima. Als ik nu 's avonds bij Z kom kijken staat soms het bedje in haar eigen bed. En Roze Knuffel.... meestal in haar armen :)

Het leukste kraamcadeau (om te geven) - The greatest baby shower gift (to give)

Het is zo ver, het kraamcadeau waar ik het meest naar uitzag kom het te kunnen geven, is op de plaats van bestemming aangekomen! Voor mij dus het leukste kraamcadeau om te geven, of dat voor de ontvanger ook zo is, daar kan ik niet over oordelen ;). Afgelopen zondag besloot mijn neefje-of-nichtje-op-komst te laten weten dat hij een neefje is en dat zijn verjaardag 8 februari zou zijn. Al een paar weken was ik bezig een 'mand' te maken met zelfgemaakte baby spulletjes. De mand heb ik uiteindelijk niet meer gemaakt. Wat er wel in zat: Een verschoningsmat, knuffel, slab en slofjes. Allemaal met een Zeeuws tintje. Bij elk projectje gebruikte ik Zeeuws schortenbont.

There it is. The baby shower gift I looked forward to the most to give, has arrived on its destination! For me it was the greatest gift to give, I can't judge if it was the greatest gift to receive also ;). Last Sunday my nice-or-nephew-to-be decided to let us know he is a nephew and his birthday would be the 8th of February. Last couple of weeks I was busy making a 'basket' with baby stuff. Finally I didn't make the basket itself anymore. The baby stuff I did make: A changingmat, stuffed animal, bib and booties. All of them in a Zealandish theme. In every project I used Zealandish schortenbont. 

De slofjes - The booties
Het patroon voor de slofjes vond ik, via Pinterest, hier. Ik gebruikte jeansstof voor de buitenkant en zwarte katoen voor de binnenkant. Een strookje schortenbont kwam op de achterkant (niet op de foto's). Het maken van de slofjes viel wat tegen. Dat kwam voornamelijk door de stofkeuze. Deze slofjes kan je blijkbaar beter maken van dunnere katoen. Jeans is dik en stug en de babyslofjes klein. Het werd dus nogal een gepruts, maar het is uiteindelijk toch gelukt.

I found the pattern for the booties here, via Pinterest. As outher fabric I used denim, for the lining I used black cotton. At the back I added a piece of schortenbont (not in the pictures). Making the booties wasn't as easy as I had hoped. The main reason for this was my choice in fabric. I guess the booties are easier to make with thinner cotton. The denim was thick and rigid and the baby booties are tiny. It was a bit of tinkering, but I finally made it.

De slab - The bib
Voor de slab tekende ik een patroon aan de hand van een slab uit mijn eigen collectie. Ik maakte de voorkant van jeansstof en de achterkant van tricot. Voor ik deze delen aan elkaar stikte, naaide ik op de jeans een strook schortenbond en een sierstiksel. Het samenvoegen van de voor- en achterkant was nog niet zo eenvoudig. Tricot en jeans samen is geen handige combinatie: De tricot rekte ontzettend, de jeans was stug en rekte dus absoluut niet. Ik had dus beter voor katoen of iets dergelijks gekozen als achterkant. Uiteindelijk ben ik toch tevreden met het resultaat. De slab sluit met klittenband in de nek.

The pattern for the bib I drew after a bib from my own collection. The front of the bib is made of denim, the back is tricot. Before sewing these parts together, I sewed a strip schortenbont and a lockstick on the front. Sewing the front and back together wasn't easy. Tricot and denim isn't a handy combination. The tricot was very stretchy and the denim absolutly not. Choosing cotton for the back would be a better idea. Finaly I'm happy with the result. The bib closes with velcro on the back. 

De knuffel - The stuffed animal
De olifant maakte ik al eerder. Het patroon vind je hier (Pinterest). Hiervoor gebruikte ik dunne, rekbare denim (lijf), badstof en schortenbont (oren). Op de poten borduurde ik de initialen van mijn neefje en zijn geboortedatum.

De verschoningsmat - The changingmat
De verschoningsmat is een mix van deze (pin) en deze (pin) tutorial. Ik gebruikte de afmetingen van de tweede tutorial, al maakte ik de bovenkant helemaal recht. De zak naaide ik er ook los op. Dit deed ik voor ik de badstof aan de denim naaide, zodat je de naden van de zak niet aan de buitenkant ziet. Voor ik de zak erop stikte, maakte ik een applicatie van schortenbond en naaide ik een strook schortenbont tussen de voering en de buitenkant van de zak. Bovenin maakte ik een lusje van elastiek en achterop de mat (net boven de zak) zit een knoop. Zo kan je hem opvouwen en meenemen.

For the changingmat I combined  this (pin) toturial with this(pin) tutorial. I used the sizes of the second tutorial, but made the top straight. I sewed the pocket seperatly on the mat. I did this before sewing the terry and denim of the mat together, so you can't see the stiches on the outside of the mat. Before doing this, I sewed an application on the pocket and added a strip of schortenbont between the outer fabric and the lining. At the top I made a little loop with an elastic and at the back of the mat (just above the pocket) I added a button. So the mat can be folded.

Ik heb echt veel plezier gehad in het maken van dit setje. Alleen al omdat ik het voor mijn (favoriete) neefje heb gemaakt! Ik hoop dat hij er ook plezier van zal hebben ;).

Snelle knuffel - Quick stuffed animal

Heb ik al gezegd dat er hier een kleine babyboom aan de gang is? Afgelopen week kwam het CBS al met net nieuws dat er meer geboortes waren in 2014 en ook voor 2015 worden er meer verwacht. Voor mijn omgeving kan ik dat beamen (al denk ik niet dat voor mijn omgeving geldt dat de geboortes zijn uitgesteld door de economische crisis, maar dat is een ander verhaal...). Twee weken geleden kregen we een uitnodiging voor een babyborrel voor de baby van een van de leidsters van het kinderdagverblijf. De borrel was afgelopen zaterdag. Ik wilde zelf iets maken voor de baby en zocht dus een snel projectje. Dat vond ik hier.

Het werd een beetje een projectje vol met twijfels. Eerst wilde ik er een tut-doekje van maken, met wat feedback uit de naaikrans, bedacht ik dat een knuffel toch leuker zou zijn.

Did I mention the little babyboom that is happening aroudn here? Last week our national bureau of statistics (CBS) brought the news of more briths in 2014, and more to be expected in 2015. I can agree with this for the people around me (altough I don't think this births are deferred becouse of the economic crisis, but that's an other story...). Two weeks ago we were invited for a babydrink (is this a true word in English?) for the baby of one of the teachers at the day care. This was last saturday. As I wanted to make a gift myself, I was looking of a quick project. I found it here.

It became a project full of doubts. First I wanted to make a cloth of it, but with the feedback at the sewing circle, I tought it would be nicer as a stuffed animal.

Het idee van rijst onder in het lijf sprak me ook wel aan. Dan kan hij ook zitten. Maar toen bedacht ik dat je de knuffel niet zou kunnen wassen, iets wat ik zelf wel belangrijk vindt. Je kan er dan speciale bolletjes in doen, maar daar had ik geen tijd meer voor. Dus dat idee heb ik laten varen.

I liked the idea of putting rice in the bottom of the stuffed animal. By doing this, the rabbit could sit. But then I tought you couldn't wash it, something I found important. You could put special globules in it, but I didn't have the time fot that. So I let go that idea.

Toen bedacht ik dat het leuk zou zijn van een oor een knisper oor te maken. Maar dit had niet de gewenste uitwerking. Het leek me ook wel grappig een belletje in het konijn of een van de oren te stoppen, want de baby heet Annabel. Maar dat leek me later toch een beetje flauw.

Then I tought it would be nice to make one crinkle ear. But this didn't work out the way I had in mind. I also tought it would be nice to put a bell in the rabbit or in an ear, becouse the baby's name is Annabel. But then I tought this would be silly.

Het idee dat wel bleef was een applicatie met de eerste letter van haar naam op het lijf van het konijn. Het konijn is gemaakt van rode fleece die ik nog had liggen en stukjes van een versleten spijkerbroek. Het snuitje heb ik er op geborduurd. Hij is ongeveer 28 cm lang. Hiervoor heb ik het patroon verdeeld over twee A4-tjes (zeg maar één A3) en voegde ik nog naadwaarde toe bij het knippen.

The idea that did survive was an application with the first letter of her name on the body of the rabbit. I made the rabbit of red fleece I had lying around and pieces of a worn out jeans. I embroidered the snout. The rabbit is about 28 cm (11 inch) long. To make a rabbit this size, I printed the pattern in two A4 papers and added some seamallowence.  

Kudde Lammetjes - Flock of Lambs

Het is hier een beetje stil de laatste tijd. Dat komt voornamelijk omdat het in het echte leven nogal druk is geweest. Vorige week zondag werd de dochter 5 jaar. Dat is een hele leeftijd. En dat zijn heel wat feestjes, waarvan het 'kinderfeestje' het belangrijkste is. Al maanden had ze het er over, en deze week was het eindelijk zover.

Al een hele tijd brak ik mijn hoofd over wat we de kindjes mee naar huis zouden geven. Afgaande op de feestjes die de dochter al had bezocht, is het toch vooral traditie om snoepzakjes mee te geven (in 25 jaar is er niet veel veranderd...). Maar ik ben niet zo van het snoepen. En het leek me wel leuk iets zelf te maken. Last-minute spraken we af dat we lammetjes zouden gaan kijken (en voeren) op een boerderij hier in de buurt. Toen bedacht ik dat het leuk zou zijn om lammetjes te maken. Deze. Het was een hele toer om de juiste stof te vinden. Uiteindelijk kon ik anderhalve week voor het feestje begon, beginnen aan de lammetjes. 9 stuks moesten het worden (7 feestgangers en 2 kindjes thuis).

It has been quiet overhere lately. That's mainly becouse I've been busy in real life. Last sunday the daughter turned 5 years. What an age. This means a lot of parties, the most important was the kidsparty. See was looking forward to this party for months, this week the party finaly took place. 

For ages I have been thinking what to give the kids who came to the party. Judging form the parties the daugher went to, it's still the tradition to give candy bags (there hasn't change much in 25 years...). I'm not realy into candies. And I wanted to give them something handmade. We made a last-minute appointment to visit a farm and watch (and feed) the lambs there. So I decided to make lambs. These. It wasn't easy to find the right fabrics. Finaly I was able to start sewing the lambs, one and a half week before the party started. 9 lambs I needed (7 partygoers and 2 kids at home). 

Het werd lopendebandwerk, 36 poten, 18 oren, 9 staartjes, lijfjes en kopjes. Op de kopjes borduurde ik de gezichtjes. Twee dagen voor het feestje had ik nog behoorlijk wat werk liggen. Dat was voornamelijk het borduren van gezichtjes en het dichtnaaien van de reeds gevulde knuffels. Die dag moest ik voor mijn werk naar Rotterdam. Dat is bijkans een wereldreis vanaf hier. Eén uur in de auto, 1,5 uur in de trein, enkele reis. Dus besloot ik de lammetjes mee te nemen, en dit handwerk in de trein te doen. Klein detail: Ik ben de enige vrouw in de club. Ja, de mannen hadden lol, maar ik had mijn werk af. Donderdag was het feest en woensdagmiddag had ik alle 9 schaapjes af. Toch nog een klein zakje snoep om elk schaapje gehangen. Roze lintje voor de meisjes, blauw voor de jongens.

It became assambly line work, 36 legs, 18 ears, 9 tails, bodies and heads. I embroidered the faces on the heads. Two days before the party started, I had a lot of work to do. Mainly embroider the faces and closing the lambs that were filled already. That day I had to go to Rotterdam for my work. It's almost like a trip around the world, from here. One hour by car and one and a half hour by train, single. So I decided to take the lambs with me and do the handiwork when I was in the train. Small detail: I'm the only woman in the club. Yes, the men had a lot of fun, but I finished my work. The party was on Thursday and on Wednesday afternoon I finished all 9 lambs. I added a little bag with candies around every lambs neck. Pink ribbon for the girls, blue for the boys.

Uit de verhalen die de ouders vertelden, begreep ik dat de kindjes het erg leuk vonden op het feestje. De knuffels gingen (bijna?) allemaal diezelfde avond mee naar bed. Feestje geslaagd.

From the stories the parents told me, I understood the kids enjoyed the party. (All?) stuffed animals went to bed with the kids, thad night. Succesful party, I guess.

De kaart en de olifant - The map and the elephant

Een collega van mij is papa geworden. Een meisje. Mijn collega is cartograaf, dus toen ik de landkaartenstof zag, bedacht ik dat het leuk was om daar een kraamcadeau van te maken. Ik maakte er een knuffeltje van. De tutorial voor deze knuffel vond ik hier, en pinde ik hier.

One of my colleagues became a dad. A girl. My colleague is a cartographer, so when I saw the fabric with the map, I tought it would be nice to make a babyshower gift with it. I made a stuffed animal with it. I found the tutorial here and pinned it here.

Aan de ene kant van de olifant is Europa te zien. Aan de andere kant Azië.

In het staartje heb ik wat inpakfolie genaaid, zodat het kraakt als je er aanzit.

In the tail I sewed some foil, so it cracks if you touch it.
 
Aan de ene kant borduurde ik de initialen van de baby, en aan de andere kant haar geboorte datum (6 maart 2014).

R14D #2: Teddybeertjes - Teddy Bears

In de Burda Kids 2013 kwam ik een patroon tegen voor echte Teddyberen tegen. Een groot en een klein formaat. Je moet ze maken van stugge Teddyberenstof. Aangezien er in mijn stapel oude kleding een aantal spijkerbroeken liggen, leek het me leuk om van twee oude spijkerbroeken twee Teddyberen van het kleine formaat te maken. Eén voor de dochter en een voor de zoon.

I found a pattern for real Teddy Bears in the Burda Kids 2013. In two different sizes, a big one and a small one. They have to be made of rough fabrics. I tought it would be nice to make two little ones from old jeans, as I have several old  jeans in my pile of old cloths. One for the daughter and one for the son.

De Teddy voor de dochter maakte ik van een oude witte spijkerbroek van mijzelf. Ik gaf haar een halvecirkelrok. Het patroon hiervoor tekende ik zelf. De stof is een restje van een blouse die ik voor de dochter maakte. Het rokje zit vast. Ik naaide het lijf, maar liet de onderkant open. Vervolgens naaide ik het rokje vast. Bij het oor maakte ik een strikje van een stukje bijpassend lint.

I made the Teddy for the daughter of a old white jeans of my own. I gave her a half circel skirt. I drewed the pattern myself. The fabric is scrap from a blouse I made for the daughter. The skirt is stitched onto the body of the bear. First I sewed the body, but I left open the bottom half.  Then I sewed the skirt on the body. At the ear I made a bow of a piece of ribbon.  

De Teddy voor de zoon maakte ik van een oude spijkerbroek van de papa. Ik gebruikte de binnenkant van de broek als goede kant voor de beer. Dan moet je verder dus niet te veel nadenken. Want als je de goede kanten op elkaar moet legen, moeten dit dus de verkeerde kanten van de stof zijn, want dat was in dit geval de goede kant van de stof. Hmm... je begrijpt dat dit wat frustratie opleverde ;). Deze beer gaf ik een stropdas. De stof hiervan komt van een oude blouse van mij. Deze naaide ik op het lijf, nadat ik de voorkant van het lijf had genaaid. Vervolgens maakte ik de rest van het lijf.

 The Teddy for the son I made from an old jeans of the daddy. I used the inner side of the jeans as the right side of the fabric. This was a bit confusing sometimes. Becouse when you have to put the right sides together, you have to put the wrong sides together, as this is the right side of the fabric in this case... Hmm.. You'll understand my frustrations now and then. ;) I gave this bear a tie. The fabric is from one of my old blouses. I sewed the tie on the body, after I sewed the front of the body. After that, I sewed the other parts of the body.

Bij het maken van zo'n knuffel komt nog behoorlijk wat handwerk kijken. Misschien is het de ICT-er in mij, maar ik houd niet van handwerk, zeker niet als het mogelijk geautomatiseerd kan... Maar goed, zo'n knuffel moet je toch vullen. En dan met de hand dicht naaien. En dan is die stof toch behoorlijk stug... Daar had ik me even op verkeken. Maar na wat uurtjes zwoegen terwijl ik TV keek, mag het resultaat er zijn.

When sewing a Teddy bear, you have to stich quite a bit by hand. It might be the ICT-er in me, but I don't like doing things by hand, especially when it could be automated... But you have to fill the bear. And then close the body and legs. By hand. And then you find out jeans fabric is stiff... I did misjudged that part. But after some hard work while watching telly, I'm pleased with the result.

De kids hebben de knuffels gekregen en zijn er heel blij mee. De dochter vond die van haar heel mooi en die van haar broer was 'cool'. Ze vond hem een politieagent. Haar knuffel moest meteen met alles meedoen en ze zorgt er heel lief voor. De knuffel van de zoon ging mee naar bed en moet altijd in zijn buurt liggen. :)

The kids are very happy with the bears. The daugher tought hers was very pretty and the one for her brother was 'cool'. She tought he looks like a police officer. Her bear had to take part of her games and she is very sweet takeing care for her. The bear of the son went to bed with him and always has to lay near him. :)
