(On)comfortabele jurk - (Un)comfortable dress

I don't return to a pattern very often. For the kids I've used the Bimaa several times. Before I was blogging I made this dress and I've made a top with this pattern also. The dress is very comfortable and I wanted to make it again, now my sewing skills are improved.

It's not very clear on the picture: the front is (almost) entirely wrinkled in the middle.

I've chosen this fabric on the market, I've showed it before here. I steped out of my comfortzone with this fabric. Suddenly I found the fabric kind of bold. Now I've made the dress, it isn't as bold as I was afraid of. But I still don't know if I would wear it at work...

Despite of my improved sewing skills, sewing the front to the back was a struggle again. One part of the straps can be sewed with the sewing machine, but the other part has to be sewn by hand. I struggle with this part everytime. This time I didn't manage again (or, actually, I didn't have the patience). So I sandwiched the front into the back strap and sewed it with the sewing machine. This way was much faster. The straps are supposed to be twisted. I think with this dress it's the first time they are twisted the way they should :). And the dress? It's super comfortable. It almost feels like a second skin.

Mijn eerste poncho - My first poncho

When I made my first steps into the world of crochet, Z ordered a poncho. She has that age when she still things dad and mom can do everything. At that time I didn't dare to start this project. Only when I received a message from my grandmother she had made a poncho for Y, I decided the time had come to start on the order Z made. I used this explanation as a base for the poncho. As a base for the border I used a part of this explanation. I used crochet-hook 5 mm (= H/8 in America or 6 in Canada, Hurray for standardization :)) and the yarn Scheepjeswol Stonewashed XL.

So, I made the poncho with her explanations, but made mine a bit lager for my 6 years old. I did it like this (Note: I'm using American terms for the stiches here! Again: Hurray for standardization...):
1. 96 Chain Stiches (it's a chain of 60 cm, 23,5 inch with crochet-hook 5). Close with a slip stitch in the first chain stich.
2. A Single Crochet in every Chain Stich. Close with a slip stich in the first Single Crochet.
3. Turn your work. Chrochet two Chain Stiches followed by a Double Crochet in the next two Single Crochet, one Chain Stich (skip one Single Crochet). * In the next 3 Single Crochet a Double Crochet, one Chain Stich (skip one Single Crochet). Repeat **, close with a Slip Stich in the second Chain Stich of this round or tie-off.
4. Turn your work. Two Chain Stiches and two Double Crochet in a chain space. * A Chain Stich and 3 Double Crochet in a chain space*. Repeat until 1/4 of the chain than you make 3 Double Crochet, 1 Chain Stitch and 3 Double crochet in the chain space. Then repeat one Chain Stich and 3 Double Crochet in a chain space, up to 3/4 of the chain. There you make 3 Double Crochet, 1 Chain Stitch and 3 Double crochet in the chain space, again. Then finish the chain repeating one Chain Stich and 3 Double Crochet in a chain space, until the end of the chain. Finish with a slip stich in the second Chain Stitch of this round or tie-off.
5. Repeat round 4 until the desired length is reached.

For the border I used two round of her pattern: round 5 and 6.
1. Start with a Slip Stich in a chain space. Make 6 Chain Stiches and 1 Double Crochet in this space. Next * 3 Chain Stiches, 1 Double Crochet, 3 Chain Stiches and 1 Double Crochet in the next chain space *. Repeat between ** until the end of the round and tie-off.
2. Start with a Slip Stich in a chain space above a group of 3 Double Crochets of the last round of the poncho. * Make 6 Double Crochets in the next chain space and 1 Slip Stich in the next chain space*. Repeat between ** until the end of the round and tie-off.

For this poncho I used:
Yarn: Scheepjeswol Stonewashed XL, 3 skeins Red Jasper (when I used up my yarn of skein 2 I only had about 10 cm left to go...), 2 skeins Blue Apatite, 2 skeins Lemon Quartz
Crochet Needle 5 (= H/8 in America or 6 in Canada... Should I say something about standardization? :D)
Pattern: As described above, this and this pattern combined.

[W.I.P Wednesday] Comfort(zone)

It's a bit disappointing, the amount of time left doing 'something' by myself, like sewing. That paltry hour a day when two of the three kids are sleeping, often is filled with other things.

During my pragnancy I started knitting again and learned how to crochet. Since then I'm doing this in the evening while watching TV. I found it very relaxing. When I first started to crochet, or even before, I wanted to make a 'Ripple Blanket' ever. Somewhere at the end of February / the beginning of March I've started to make one for Y. It's ment for the bedstead. Since the end of March she has grown out of her cradle, but she wil be in the bedstead until she is about 2 years. I make one round every evening, if I keep working in this tempo, she will sleep under this blanket by winter...

In the mean time I try to sew something, on my days off. Yesterday I've started a new project for myself. When I bought this fabric, I immediatly knew I was going to make a dress I've made before with it. Returning to a pattern isn't something I do often, but this pattern I've already used to make a top and dress (before I had this blog, so no pictures). I'm going out of my comfortzone with this dress. The more I see the fabric, the more 'daring' I found it. The model of the dress is a little bold too. It's a tight dress, 'till just above the knee with a deep V neck. But it feels so comfortable... I hope I dare to wear this dress... :)

S en de beer - S and the bear

When I bought a fabric for Z's birthday dress at Sew Natural, I was seduced to by this fabric for S. I already had in mind what I would make with it: a T-shirt with short raglan sleeves. I diligenty started to drew a pattern. Then the Knippie arrived, and in it stood a T-shirt with short raglan sleeves. So I decided not to make it hard on myself and use this pattern as a base.

I did alter some details in the pattern, starting with the neckline. In the original pattern there is a split between the front and one of the sleeves. I didn't like this and I guessed the neckline would be wide enough to fit over S's head. As I could have easily made this dress without the split, I dared to take this gamble. Well, it turned out wide enough, it even could be made a bit more narrow.

When finishing the hem, the strip at the bottom should be sewn on top of the the shirt. When fitting, I found the shirt a bit short. So I decided to fold the strip and sew it as an extention on the shirt.

In the end I only used the original pattern as a base. This shirt is a bit wider and shorter then I had hoped for. Maybe next time I'll make my own pattern al along...? S is just very happy with his bear-shirt, and that's what is important, isn't it?
