Fashion Revelution Day

Vandaag is het 24 april. Vandaag is het een jaar geleden dat in Bangladesh de kledingfabriek Rana Plaza instortte. Drie bloggers hebben vandaag uitgeroepen tot Fashion Revelution Day. Als nagedachtenis aan deze ramp en om stil te staan bij waar onze kleding vandaan komt. Ik vind het zelf lastig. Vooral voor de kinderen kijk ik erg naar de prijs van kleding. Ik heb niet zo'n zin om een fortuin uit te geven aan iets dat maar een paar maanden gedragen wordt. Maar de laatste tijd vraag ik me toch steeds weer af of mijn kledingkeuze verantwoord is. Hoe maak je een verantwoorde kledingkeuze? Voor voedsel en apparaten is het makkelijk, daar zijn keurmerken voor. Maar aan kleding hangt geen keurmerk. Duurder betekend vast ook niet altijd meer verantwoord.

In remembering of this desaster and to think about where our clothes come from. I found this inconvenient. Especially when it comes to the kids clothes, I watch the price carefully. I don't want to spend a fortune on clothes which only will be worn for a couple of months. Lately I wonder if my choice for clothes is a responsible choice. How do you make a responsible choice? For food or equipment it's easy, there are marks who will tell you if your choice is responsible. But how about clothes, they don't have a mark. More expensive doesn't mean it's more responsible, is it?

Misschien maar vaker zelf kleding maken. Dan weet ik in ieder geval onder welke omstandigheden de kleding is gemaakt ;). Alleen... de stof, is die wel verantwoord gemaakt?

Toen ik aankondigde dat ik aan deze dag mee zou doen, dacht je zeker dat je eindelijk mijn gezicht eens kon zien? Nou ja, het is in ieder geval een foto van mij. Het shirt heb ik vorig jaar gemaakt. En ik sta in mijn kleding kast. Vast niet tussen alleen maar verantwoorde kleding.

Maybe just make my own clothes, then. Then I know for sure in what circumstances it's made ;). Just... the fabric, is that a responsible choice?

Wie maakte jouw kleding? - Who made your clothes?

Op 24 april 2013 stortte in Bangladesh een fabriek in. Meer dan 1100 mensen overleefden deze ramp niet. In een klap werd duidelijk hoe slecht de situatie is voor mensen die voor ons (goedkope) kleding maken. Sindsdien vragen steeds meer mensen zich af waar de kleding vandaan komt. Ik moet zeggen dat ik er niet altijd bij nadenk. Maar toch... als ik een heel goedkoop shirtje zie, vraag ik me toch af of ik het wel zou moeten kopen. Stel dat mijn dochter in kleding loopt die gemaakt is door een kindje van haar leeftijd, onder slechte omstandigheden...

Gisteren zag ik deze post op de blog Things For Boys. Ik zou zeggen, lees de post (hij is wel in het Engels), het heeft mij aan het denken gezet. Ter nagedachtenis aan de ramp op 24 april vorig jaar, wordt 24 april uitgeroepen als dag om aandacht te schenken aan de slechte omstandigheden waarin mensen in de kledingindustrie moeten werken. De oproep: draag een kledingstuk (al dan niet handgemaakt) binnenstebuiten (of laat je kinderen dat doen - och arme...) en maak er een foto van. Zet deze op je blog, of op andere social media (instagram, twitter, facebook, ...), gebruik hierbij de hashtag #insideout of #handmadeinsideout. Ik vind het een geweldig idee, en ja, mij hebben ze zo gek gekregen, ik doe mee... En denk ondertussen na waar de kleding vandaan komt die ik aanschaf....

On April 24th 2013 a factory colapsed in Bangladesh. Over 1100 people didn't survive this desaster. How bad the situation is for people who make our (cheep) clothes, came cleare at once. More and more people are questioning the origin of their clothes since. Honestly, I don't think about that everytime I buy clothes. Still... when I see a very cheep shirt, I wonder if I should buy it. Imagine the daughter wearing clothes which are made by a child of her age, in bad circumstances...

Yesterday I read this post on the blog Things For Boys. I'd say: read it, it put me thinking. In rememberance of the desaster of the 24th of April last year, 24th April will be a day to pay attention to the bad circumstances the people in clothing facturies work in. The call: where a garment (handmade, or store bought) insideout (or let your kids do this - oh, dear...) and make a picture of it. Post it on your blog, or use other social media (instagram, twitter, facebook, ...) and use the hastag #insideout or #handmadeinsideout. I think its a great idea, and yes, I'm in... And in the meantime I'll questioning the origin of the clothes I want to buy.
