Voor de kleine werkman - For the little worker

(While I'm writing this post, the kids are playing outside, without a coat. And I'm outside, sitting in the sun - also without a coat -, it's wonderfull!)

I've finished the coverall, I wrote about before. And becouse of the nice weather, it also was possible to take pictures. I prefer to take pictures outside, becouse I think it gives the best result. Although I made some mistakes, while sewing this coverall, I'm happy with the result.

For my little 2-year old man, I made a size 4 (4 years), becouse the coverall has to go over his other clothes. For fitting over his clothes, the width was just right. It's too long, as was to be expected. Therefore, I finished the hem with a kind of baistape, so it looks nice when the hem is flipped over.

Now it looks like the tape is upside down, but I did this on purpose. When the hem is flipped over, the pictures are standing up! :)

Becouse I did cut the sleeve pieces to short, I finished them in the same way. Here I used red baistape.

As I wrote before, the original collar was too short. So I drew a collar myself. As you can see it all ended up well for the collar.

Although the pattern doesn't prescribe it, I provided the coverall with knee pads. I did struggle to find the right place for them. Eventually they turned out to be to low. Now they are more shin pads as they are knee pads. But they are cute, aren't they...? :)

When you closely study the cut- and sew instructions, you know you have to cut front and back in one part, including the yokes. You have to cut the yokes separately, and put them over the shoulders, later. When you study the instructions closely... Apparently I didn't. I did cut the yokes separatly, and didn't cut the front and back as one part with the yokes. So I had to sew the yokes on. It did make my work more difficult, especially on the front. When you take a closer look, you could see the front isn't as neat as it should be... Well, fortunately it isn't a partydress, it's a pair of playing pants. Though it bothers my perfectionist self a little. I gues my perfectionist self has to keep quiet for a while. ;)

Now our little man. He does like his 'broek' (Dutch for pants) as he calls his coverall. It looks cute on him (the proud mama said, very objectivily). After the photoshoot he wanted to keep it on. Within half an hour the coverall became durty. Well, that's why you put it on, isn't it? This morning, he saw it and immediatly called:mooi! (Dutch for beautiful) Can you get a better compliment? The combination of fabrics and colors makes it a coverall with a Dutch twist. All we need are some blonde curly hairs and a pair of woodenshoes.

[W.I.P Wednesday] Frustraties - Frustrations

People who know me (well), know I get frustrated when things don't work out the way I planned. I remember how I use to crumple my drawings as a kid, when they didn't turn out the way I had in my mind. I have temed that behaviour over the years, but still get frustrated when things don't work out, when I think they should. I had something like that the other day. I'm sewing a coverall (is this the right translation?), the 'Carpenter' from Homemade Mini Couture. It has a collar, which has to go all around the neck, and should start and end on both sides of the zipper. When I made the collar and pinned it around the neckline, it turned out to be to short (see picture abouve). Whatever I tried, I didn't get it right. Maybe I made a mistake while transfering the collar pattern, or sewing the body? The finished collar was as large as the transfered pattern piece. This wasn't the first thing that went wrong, sewing this coverall, and I did get frustrated. Happily I'm following a course in pattern making (exam on April 1st, no joke!), so I measured the neckline and did draw a collar myself. This one fits. I hope to show you the result soon, the coverall is almost finished...

Wie maakte jouw kleding? - Who made your clothes?

Fashion Revolution Day Handmade

On April 24th 2013 a factory colapsed in Bangladesh. Over 1100 people didn't survive this desaster. How bad the situation is for people who make our (cheep) clothes, came cleare at once. More and more people are questioning the origin of their clothes since. Honestly, I don't think about that everytime I buy clothes. Still... when I see a very cheep shirt, I wonder if I should buy it. Imagine the daughter wearing clothes which are made by a child of her age, in bad circumstances...

Yesterday I read this post on the blog Things For Boys. I'd say: read it, it put me thinking. In rememberance of the desaster of the 24th of April last year, 24th April will be a day to pay attention to the bad circumstances the people in clothing facturies work in. The call: where a garment (handmade, or store bought) insideout (or let your kids do this - oh, dear...) and make a picture of it. Post it on your blog, or use other social media (instagram, twitter, facebook, ...) and use the hastag #insideout or #handmadeinsideout. I think its a great idea, and yes, I'm in... And in the meantime I'll questioning the origin of the clothes I want to buy.

De kaart en de olifant - The map and the elephant

One of my colleagues became a dad. A girl. My colleague is a cartographer, so when I saw the fabric with the map, I tought it would be nice to make a babyshower gift with it. I made a stuffed animal with it. I found the tutorial here and pinned it here.

On one side of the elephant you'll se Europe, on the other side you'll see Asia.

In the tail I sewed some foil, so it cracks if you touch it.

On one side I embroidered the baby's initials, on the other side I embroidered her birthday (March 6th, 2014).

Online gekocht - Bought online

In the region where I live aren't much fabric stores. I get my stuff, but don't have much choices. In online stores you can finde enough. Altough I did hesitate to buy fabrics online. I want to feel a fabric before I buy it. I often combine one fabric with another, something that is harder to do online than in real life. And then there is the postage. Most of the time, you can buy about a meter of fabric in a local fabric store for the price of the postage. Specially when you buy fabrics from a online shop abroad.

Finaly I tacked an bought four fabrics at de Stoffenkamer. Its a Belgian webshop so its an abroad webshop, altough I live quite near to Belgium. Despite that, the postage wasn't to bad (7,50 euro). The fabrics where send to me on Monday and arrived on Wednesday. I'm very happy with the fabrics, they are gorgeous. Partly I know what I'm going to make with them, so you'll see them around.

De broek - The pants

The pants are finished and photographed for a while now. Now I found time to write about is, so: Here he is! ;). The daughter needed new pants and I desiced to make them myself. I chose the Pencil Stripe pattern from the book Homemade Mini Couture. This is actualy a pattern from the Boys-part of the book, but that's something no-one can see! ;) Becouse there isn't a measurement table in the book, I guessed I needed a size 5. The daughter turns 5 soon, and she has long legs, so I tought a size 4 would be to short. A size 5 could be to wide, but the pattern comes with a buttonhole elastic, so if I was lucky...

I used a scrap of piping for the edges of the front pockets. For topstiching I used a matching thread color (pink).

Ik voorzag de broek van achterzakken. Deze stikte ik door met roze garen.

I gave the pants some pockets on the back. I topstiched them with pink thread.

This pants has a fly. It became the first fly I made. It cost me some pinpricks in my fingers, but I made it. It wasn't the easiest thing to do, sometimes I had to think it over or sew parts over. The next fly will come together easier, now I know how it works. The effect of doing this is I study the fly everytime I put on some pants...

Breedte maat 4, lengte maat 5. Hopelijk is die niet te breed...

I'm pleased with the result, and so is the daughter. The length of the pants is fine. A bit long, but gives room to grow. Sadly the pants are to wide. She could keep them on, thanks to the buttonhole elastic, but you can tell he is to wide and that doesn't look great. So he stays in the wardrobe for a while. I hope the daughter also will grow in width and not only in length. In the mean time I bought her some new pants and I'm going to made a new Pencil Stripe. Width size 4, length size 5. I hope this one wouldn't be to wide...

[W.I.P. Wednesday] Nog wat biaisband - Some biastape again

The pants I was working on last week, are finished. I only have to take some pictures of it, before I can show them here. So, stay in touch, more about this one soon! :) Now I'm working on two babyshower gifts, for two colleagues who had a baby (or will have one soon). I only can show the presents after I've given them away. But I can show you some sneak previews. Here is one. For one of the gifts I made some biasband again. This time I used such a handy baisband-folding-thing. It saves lot of folding and almost-burned-fingers! I did get a quick an neat result. This little thing is realy worth its investment! :)
