Nieuw jaar, nieuw project - New Year, new project

In a few hours, 2013 is gone and 2014 is started. In many parts of the world 2014 began already... Just get trough some traditions, like eating oliebollen, fireing fireworks (or let someone else do that), drinking champange. And wishing everyone you meet the next days a 'Happy New Year', and than (finaly) the normal life can start again. This year I did get the oliebollen at the baker, as our fryer is off duty. I did make sausage rolls (family tradition honored by me) and mini appelflappen, with the help of my daugher.

At this last day of the year, I made some steps to a new project. I wanted to make a backpack for my daughter. The store-bought backpacks fastly are worn out. Yesterday I bought the toddler backpack pattern of Rae Hoekstra (Made By Rae). Today I went to the local fabricstore with the kids, the daughter could choose the fabrics. No pink fabrics this time. No, it had to be fabrics with hearts. As outher fabric she has choosen a green fabric, with many little hearts (I would choose this fabric for a lining, but it's her bag, so she chooses...). For lining I choose a fabric with larger hearts. This fabric looks like the fabric I used to make a dress earlier, only this hearts are on a green background in stead of a white background.

The daughter likes pockets. A lot. The default pattern doesn't have pockets. I did remember Sherri of Thread Riding Hood had made a bag like this, including a front pocket, and wrote a tutorial about this. So I searched for the tutorial. Now I have to buy some supplies and I can take the backpack in production... ;) To be continued...

Happy New Year('s eve), be carefull with the fireworks!

Fijne Kerstdagen - Merry Christmas

My sewingmachine stands still for a while now. I have so many ideas and that is causing a kind of sewers-block. I don't know where to start, so I don't start at all. Altough... the adjustable elastic of the skirt my daughter 'has to' wear tomorrow became loose. And then it comes clear that size 104, although fitting fine in length, is too wide for her. Yeah, the skirt dropped literal from her ..... I fixed that tonight last-minute. By hand! Yes, miracles still happen. And while speaking of Miracles I end up with Christmas. Have a merry Christmas, and stop by an other time when I do get my sewingmachine to work again ;)

[Patroon review - Pattern review] Gerecycleerd Ethan shirt - Recycled Ethan shirt

During Boomie's recycle 14 days, I started makeing a blouse for the son. Unfortunally I thought my sewing machine was broken. When I found out it wasn't, it was too late for the blouse being part of it. After all I finished the blouse with a delay of one week. After that came a new challenge: makeing pictures of this creation... Wednesday was the first time, my son did wear the blouse, but he wasn't realy in a picture-makeing-mood. With some distraction, I was able to make some pictures :).

Becouse I couldn't use this blouse for the recycle 14 day's, I decided to make a Pattern Review of it. It's my first Pattern Review, so I hope I'll do it right :). The pattern I used is the Ethan shirt of Sis Boom. I bought this pattern as part of the Sew Fab Bundle, last summer. The description is in English, and the measurements are in inches. My reading in English is betther than my writing, so that wasn't a problem. I converted the mesurements to centimeaters. I could have measured in centimeters, of course, if only my tape-measure had centimeters and inches on it ;).

The pattern is suiteble for boys in the ages 1 untill 14 years. I think that's realy great! My little boy almost turns 2 years, so I can use this pattern for a while ;). The pattern description is very detailed. It describes which sizes you need and how to measure them. It also explains what to do, when you can't take measures (for example, when the shirt is a gift). Every age (in years) has his own size. Per size you can differ the length of the front, back and sleeves. All is very well explained.

The description of how to sew the shirt also is very clear. It's all explained step by step and every step is supported by a picture. I read about using a gluestick when sewing before overhere. I applied it the first time, sewing this shirt. It works realy great! The description regulary explains when and how to apply this trick. It gives a realy great result.

I'm realy satisfied with this pattern. It's fairly simple to put the shirt together, thanks to the clear explanation. The result is great. The back of the shirt is a bit longer than the front, and I realy love the collar! I like little details on clothing, so I made one orange button hole. Back in the days, when this blouse belongs to my father, it also had an orange button hole, and I wanted this little detail to come back in the shirt for my son. Next time, I'll enlarge the front and back of the shirt. This is something I misjudged and isn't an error in the pattern. For my little chap, the cluffs are a bit small. I have to make those a bit wider next time, becouse I can't close them now. That isn't realy a problem, 'couse when it is possible (on an onther shirt) they aren't always closed eighter. I like the idea of changeing the pattern a bit, to make a shirt for my daughter of it.

En dan hier nog even de 'voor' foto - Here the 'before' photo

Patroon: Ethan shirt van Sis Boom
Stof: Oude blouse van de (o)pa

Geslaagd! - Passed!

I drew a pattern for a coat, thuesday last week. This was my 'exam task' for the course in pattern makeing, I follow since September. I did get the results last thuesday: I'm passed! :) Now I can draw basic patterns for blouses, coats, skirts and pants, by myself. In January I'll start a follow up course.

Also my sewingmachine is back in buisiness. The teatcher gave me a tip, just to start to sew, the transporter will probably come up by it self then. I had to try this immediatly when I came home. And ik works! :) Now I was able to finish the recycle blouse after all and start on the pullover!

Verplichte pauze - Mandatory break

Boomie's Recyle 14 day's runs until next saturday. I was working on my last project for these 14 days: a blouse of the granddad (my father) becomes a blouse for the son. The project proceeded a bit slower then I had hoped for. There was always something coming inbetween... I only had to make 2 buttonholes and sew on 4 buttons. I was going to do that Thursday evening.

Balen.

I sewed on one button and wanted to make the buttonholes on the cuffs. Unfortunaly, the transporter (wich I set down for sewing on the buttons) wouldn't come up again. :( I hate it when I fail to meet my own deadline, especially when my machine is the couse of it. This morning I went to the shop where I bought the machine. Only to find out they are closed until the 3rd of December...

So I'm on a mandatory break now. Well, I was makeing a pullover pattern for a pullover that fits over the blouse I'm makeing. Now I have time to work on that... I hope it doesn't take much time to repair my sewingmachine, though.

R14D #3 iPhonehoes - iPhonecover

Doesn't every girl have a favorite pair of shoes? I did too. A pair of fantastic boots. Leather on the outside, leather on the inside. Great fit. They fitted perfectly around my tiny legs (normally the biggest problem when buying new boots). As of the winter of 2009/2010 they protected my feet from cold, rain, snow, ... At the end of last (very long) winter, I did get wet feet somtimes when it rained. After four seasons of loyal duty, my boots where getting worn out. I had to process this. With a new winter coming up, I decided to replace them. But I couldn't throw the old ones away. Giveing them away wasn't an option eighter, becouse the receiver would also get wet feet in them. Then I got an idea... I disasambled one of the boots (that was quite a job, so I didn't start on the other one) and made a new cover for my iPhone.

I did use a part of the pattern I made earlier. I used a thicker needle (90/14) then the one I use when sewing fabrics (75/11). I used a special pressure foot for leather, that comes with the sewing machine. The leather doesn't slip under this foot. The leather isn't very thick and flexible, so it sewed nicely. For the outside of the cover I used the outher fabric of the boot. For the inside of the cover, I used the lining of the boot. Also leather, but thin. I didn't finish the hem, becouse turning it inside-out wasn't an option for this leather. Luckaly leather doesn't fray, so this worked fine.

I used the belt and buckle that runs over the instep of the boot as a closure for the cover. I lengthened it with a piece of lining. I stitched it in place, so the band lifts the phone out of the cover. It closes with Velcro.

I made a pocket for my keycard on the inside of the cover. I tought it wouldn't look nice to make a pocket on the outside of the cover. So I did it this way.

Result: my worn-out boot has a new life as iPhonecover and my iPhone has a frim home.

R14D #2: Teddybeertjes - Teddy Bears

I found a pattern for real Teddy Bears in the Burda Kids 2013. In two different sizes, a big one and a small one. They have to be made of rough fabrics. I tought it would be nice to make two little ones from old jeans, as I have several old  jeans in my pile of old cloths. One for the daughter and one for the son.

I made the Teddy for the daughter of a old white jeans of my own. I gave her a half circel skirt. I drewed the pattern myself. The fabric is scrap from a blouse I made for the daughter. The skirt is stitched onto the body of the bear. First I sewed the body, but I left open the bottom half.  Then I sewed the skirt on the body. At the ear I made a bow of a piece of ribbon.

The Teddy for the son I made from an old jeans of the daddy. I used the inner side of the jeans as the right side of the fabric. This was a bit confusing sometimes. Becouse when you have to put the right sides together, you have to put the wrong sides together, as this is the right side of the fabric in this case... Hmm.. You'll understand my frustrations now and then. ;) I gave this bear a tie. The fabric is from one of my old blouses. I sewed the tie on the body, after I sewed the front of the body. After that, I sewed the other parts of the body.

Daar had ik me even op verkeken.

When sewing a Teddy bear, you have to stich quite a bit by hand. It might be the ICT-er in me, but I don't like doing things by hand, especially when it could be automated... But you have to fill the bear. And then close the body and legs. By hand. And then you find out jeans fabric is stiff... I did misjudged that part. But after some hard work while watching telly, I'm pleased with the result.

The kids are very happy with the bears. The daugher tought hers was very pretty and the one for her brother was 'cool'. She tought he looks like a police officer. Her bear had to take part of her games and she is very sweet takeing care for her. The bear of the son went to bed with him and always has to lay near him. :)

R14D #1: [Tutorial] Wijnglas onderzetters - Wine coasters

Boomie organizes 14 days of recyling (I abbreviated it to R14D), starting at November 17 until November 30. I cheated a little, by makeing some recycle projects in de passed weeks. The next 14 days I'll try to blog only about recycling... My first project is little and easy, ideal for using up some scraps: Wine coasters.

Recognize this? You're throwing a (garden) party, all wine glasses are the same. Eventually the partygoers can't find their own glass anymore (not becouse they are drunk, but becouse all glasses are the same). These coasters are the solution to this problem. They also protect te table as they catch the spilling winedrops. The idea for these coasters I found, via Pinterest, here. There wasn't a description of how to make them. So I figured it out myself, and made a tutorial of it.

All you need are five circles, with a 1cm wider radius (Maths: the radius is half the diameter) as the radius of the foot of the wineglass. Use thin fabrics. When you use a thicker fabric for the bottom circle, the wineglass will not be very stable...

6.  De onderzetter is klaar.

1. Fold four circles in half and iron them. 2. Place the four folded circles on the fifth circle. One half circle overlaps another one. Pin them. 3.  Sew, using a small seamallowence, like 0,5 cm. 4. Cut off the seamallowence with pinking shears or make notches. 5. Turn the coaster trough the hole between the half circles. 6. The coaster is finished.

Now you can put it on a wineglass. I struggled a bit doing this, but it works. It might be easier to use knits. I'll try this later.

Proost!

Make different coasters, so no-one will lose his glass! Chears!

Op een laag pitje - On the back burner

Due to circumstances there wasn't and isn't much sewing around here. As a result, there isn't much blogging eighter. I will catch up on both. For the time being, I'll show some work in progress.

Keep in touch, I'll have some projects to blog about soon :)

Verlaat cadeau - Late gift

Mijn verjaardag is al weer even geleden.

It's been a while since my birthday. Amongst others, I got the book Allemaal Rokjes. One of the other gifts was a coupon. I still had to use this coupon. Last weekend I ordered the book Homemade Mini Couture. This book has nice retro sewingpatterns for girls ánd boys! From the age of 6 months up to the age of 10 years.

This morning the daughter did browse the book. 'Mom, I just have taken a look in it.' she said. I probebly will get a request for makeing a dress, skirt, (...), soon ;)

Groeispurt - Growth spurt

From one day to another the daugher did grow out of her clothes. Realy... all clothes. Pants and sweaters suddenly were to short... She realy needed new clothes. So I got her new clothes. No. I didn't sew it all, I'm nog quick enough for that. Most clothes I bought. But when I discoverd Burda Kids 2013 and found some nice patterns, including a nice project for her new wardrobe. A tunic.

What I like on this pattern are the sides and the pockets on the front (the pockes are making this tunic one of the daughers favorites).

I finished the neckline with a twinneedle, with two different colors. Green and pink.

I made some adjustments to the pattern. First I used scraps from the pink project for the pockets and the piping of the pockets.

The sleeve edges and the lower edge of the tunic didn't need to be finished. I din't like that. So I shortened the sleeve lengths and added some knit fabric (boordstof in Ducht, I don't know the English word for this...) as finishing. I'm glad with the result. It looks very comfortable.

The lower edge of the tunic I finished with a twinneedle, with the same colors as the neckline. I realy should learn to sew more straigt. Overall I'm happy with the result. And the daughter is too :).

Update

I almost forgot... From the scraps I made a matching braid. For the measurements I used a braid from the daughter. When she took the 'old' braid she noticed: this one is as big as my new one! Yeah.. you can't fool her ;).

Recycle

Now and then I recycle old clothes or scraps. I use them to make something new. I got the idea from this blog. Boomie organises a recycle 14-days from November 17 to November 30. I already have to much ideas (cuddly, label cloth, hat...), so I'm going to try to join the 14-days of recycling. The fact that she announces it so early, now I can prepare ;).

Ga jij mee doen? Wat zijn jou recycle ideeën?

Are you going to join? Which recyling ideas do you have?

[Tutorial] Wikkeldoek & Verschoningsmat - Wrap & Changing mat

I found a nice tutorial for making a changing mat here. I wanted to make this for a baby shower gift. Then I thought a wrap would be nice eighter. So I decided to combine the two and made a tutorial of it at once.

Dit heb je nodig:
1x badstof 70x70 cm
1x katoen 70x70 cm
1x badstof 30x30 cm
1x katoen 30x30 cm

This is what you need:
1x terry 70x70 cm
1x cotton 70x70 cm
1x terry 30x30 cm
1x cotton 30x30 cm
Optional 370 cm piping (Tutorials for sewing in piping: here and here)

1. Cut the patches of 30x30 diagonally, you'll get two triangles of each fabric.

2. Optional. When you use piping, sew this on the hypotenuse on the right side of the terry triangles. Cut out the cord of the piping about one centimeter from the edge.

3. Lay the terry triangles on the cotton triangles, right sides together. Stich the hypotenuse (= the longest side of the triangles). Fold the wrong sides together.

4. Lay the triangles each in a opposite corner of the large terry patch. Right side of the terry triangle on the right side of the terry patch. Stitch the narrow along the edges.

5. Stich the triangle, you want to use as a storage, at 15 cm from the corner, parallel to the edge (see the black line on the picture).

6. Optioneel.

6. Optional. When you use piping, sew the piping on the right side of the large terry patch, on which you just sewed the two triangles..

7. Lay the cotton patch on the terry patch, right sides together. Stitch around the edges, leaving a turning hole open.

8. Cut the edges and turn the cloth. Close the turning hole.

That's it, it's done. Wrap your baby in it, after his bath, or give it away as a present!

Cadeau - Present

Today I visited a birthdayparty of a two-year old. A month ago this girl became a big sister. For her baby-sister I already made a present. A bathcape...

...which can be used as a nurserymat, as it has pockets for wipes and diapers. (I'm writing a tutorial for this cape)

I tought it was nice to make someting with the same fabric for the big sister. For a long time, I doubted what to make. Becouse tastes differ and I had to guess for the size. Eventually I made a reversible A line skirt. It has a denim fabric on one side...

...the other side is the same fabric as is used in the cape for the baby sister. The waisband is made from a scrap from 'The Pink Project'. The size (92 [= 2T]) was the right size, and the girls (and the mom) liked the presents.

Both projects I finished with pink piping. Actually I was looking for 'normal' piping. But at the suppliesshop they only had this pink piping with lacing. Nevertheless I bought it, and I don't regret it. Isn't it cute? :)
