Zonen09 Bas Hack

Ik zeg niet zo snel dat ik ergens trots op ben. Maar nu ga ik het toch zeggen... Op het resultaat van dit project ben ik best trots. Een sneak peek kon je hier al zien (laatste foto). Het resultaat was precies zoals ik het in mijn hoofd had, en ik heb er best wat aan gepuzzeld. Hoewel ik van de snel klaar projectjes houd, geven projecten die wat meer gepuzzel en energie vragen ontzettend veel voldoening, als het allemaal lukt. Dat was hierbij het geval.

S had nood aan korte broeken. Ik ben fan van Zonen09 patronen, en de Bas vind ik helemaal geweldig. Hier zie je mijn eerste Bas. De details doen 't m echt bij dit patroon. En nu had ik een normale korte broek in mijn hoofd, gebaseerd op Bas. Dus. Meestal doe je zoiets andersom geloof ik, van een gewone broek een tuinbroek maken. Maar ik ben altijd een beetje anders ;). Ik maakte eerst een proef exemplaar, paste nog wat aan en ging meteen door 'voor het echt'.

I'm not someone who says she is proud on something she did. But now I do... I'm quite proud with the results of this project. I showed a sneak peek before (last picture). It turned out exacly as I had in mind, despite the puzzling it took. I do love quick sew project, but the projects that take more puzzling, and more energy, but turn out the way you had in mind, give much satisfaction. This was just such a project.

S was in need of some shorts. I'm a fan of the Zonen09 patterns. Bas is my favorite. I blogged about my first Bas here. I realy love the details of this pattern. I had shorts in my mind, based on the Bas pattern. So. Normal people turn trousers into dungerees. But I'm not normal I suppose, I turned a dungeree into shorts. I made a prototype first, made some adjustments and made the real one after that. 
 

Wat er natuurlijk in moest waren de plooien in de pijpen aan de voorkant. Maar ook de lusjes waar bij de echte Bas de schouderbanden door horen te gaan. Rond de tailleband maakte ik ook lusjes, waar eventueel een riem door zou kunnen lopen. Ook maakte ik een nep gulp. Ik spiekte hiervoor even bij het Jacob patroon. Ik vergat er een foto van te maken, maar op onderstaande foto kan je het een beetje zien.

Of course the folds had to be added to this version of Bas. But also the loops which are for the shoulderbelts in the real Bas. I added little loops around the waistband, so we could use a belt if necessary.  I also added a fake zipper. I cribbed at the Jacob pattern for this. I forgot to take a proper picture of it, but in the picture below you could see it.

En een jongensbroek kan natuurlijk niet zonder zakken. De vorm van de zakken baseerde ik op de overgang van de broek naar het voorpand in de echte Bas, om zoveel mogelijk van de details van het originele patroon mee te nemen.

Boys pants needs pockets. I based the shape of the pockets on the transition of the pants to the body in the real Bas pattern.
 

Aan de achterkant van de broek verwerkte ik verstelelastiek in de tailleband. En ook hier komen bekende details terug.

At the back I added adjustable elastic in the waistband. And also some known details of the Bas pattern.
 

Een van de geweldige details van de Bas zijn de schouderbanden die vanuit de zijnaad starten. Dit heb ik teruggebracht in deze broek. De lusjes heb ik er wel anders overheen geplaatst dan in het originele patroon, zodat er eventueel riem door zou kunnen. Ze zijn echt functioneel dus ;)

One of the most great details of the Bas are the shoulderbelts, which start form the side hem. This detail was added to my shorts. The loops are placed differently so we're able to pull a belt trough if nececcary. 

Ik probeerde de 'schouderband' op het zelfde punt te laten starten  als de zak. Dat is bijna gelukt :)

I tried to place the 'shoulderbelt' at the same point as the pockets on the front. I almost made it :)

Ik gebruikte de markering van de kniehoogte op het patroon als kniplijn. Ik wilde namelijk dat de broek tot op de knieën zou komen. Dat lukte perfect! En om de Zonen09 look af te maken, is de broek gemaakt uit een restje Stickly Rockers, waar ik vorig jaar een Zonen09 outfit mee maakte :)

I used the knee mark on the pattern as cutting line. Becouse I wanted the shorts to be at knee length. This worked out just fine! And to finish the Zonen09 look, I made these shorts with a left over of Stickly Rockers, which I used to make an other Zonen09 outfit last year.

[Tutorial] Twee zij-plooitjes worden stolpplooi - Change two side pleats into one box pleat

Toen ik het Ethan shirt voor de dochter wilde maken, wist ik meteen dat ik de twee plooitjes onder de schouders wilde vervangen door een stolpplooi in het midden. Hiervoor paste ik het patroon aan, en werden de stappen voor het vastzetten van het achterpand aan de schouderpas iets anders. In deze tutorial beschrijf ik hoe je dit doet.

When I was planning to make the Ethan shirt for the daughter, I immediatly knew I was going to replace the two side pleats for a boxpleat. To do this, I changed the pattern and the steps for sewing the back onto the back yoke. In this tutorial I describe how to do this. 
 

Aanpassingen in het patroon - Changes in the pattern

1. Neem het patroon over, bijvoorbeeld op patroon papier. Of gebruik je uitgeprinte patroon, maar knip dit nog iet uit. Neem ook de tekens voor de plooitjes over.

1. Trace the pattern, or use the printed pattern. If you use the printed pattern, don't cut it out yet. Also trace the marks for the (side) pleats.

2. Meet de afstand tussen het midden van de twee tekens van de plooi. Laten we dit de plooiafstand noemen...

2. Measure the distance between the pleat marks. I will refer to this distance as pleat distance.

3a. Om de plooi te tekenen, is extra ruimte gegeven bij de schoudernaad. Zet een markering die even groot is als de plooiafstand, gemeten vanaf de zijnaad op de schoudernaad.

3a. To draw the pleat, there was made more room at the shoulder seam. Measure the pleat distance, starting at the side seam on the shoulder, going inside. Mark this spot.

3b. Teken het armsgat opnieuw, vanuit het punt dat je in stap 3a hebt aangegeven.

3b. Redraw the armhole, starting from the mark you pointed out in step 3a.

3c. Als het goed is, is je nieuwe armsgat even groot als het origineel. Dit kan je met je meetlint nameten.

3c. Your new armhole has to be as large as the original one. Check this with your tape measure.

4. We willen een stolpplooi in het midden van het achterpand. Teken een strook die zo breed is als deze plooiafstand aan middenachter (helemaal van boven tot onder). Zet een markering op de originele middenachter en de nieuwe middenachter.

4. The boxpleat will be at the center back. Draw a strip on center back (top to bottom) as wide as the pleat distance. Mark the original center back and the new center back. 

5. De volgende punten gebruik je nu als markeerpunten:
a. Het linkse punt van de puntjes die de originele plooi aangaven. Dit wordt het punt dat straks matcht met de markering op de schouderpas.
b. Het punt waar eerst middenachter zat.
c. De nieuwe middenachterlijn.

5. Use the following marks:
a. The left mark of the two marks which marked the original side pleat. This mark will match the mark on the back yoke. 
b. The original spot of center back
c. The new center back 

6. Knip het patroon uit je stof. De (nieuwe) middenachterlijn uiteraard op de stofvouw.

6. With the new center back on fold, cut the pattern out of the fabric.  

Aanpassingen in het naaiproces - Changes in the sewingproces

Zodra je aangekomen bent bij de beschrijving van het maken van de plooitjes en het vastzetten van de schouderpas op het achterpand, ga je als volgt te werk (en wijk je dus af van de originele beschrijving).

When you get to making the pleats and stich the back yoke on the back, in your sewing process, do as follows (and do not follow your description for a short time).

1. Vouw het achterpand met de goede kanten op elkaar, zodat de markeringen van de stolpplooi (5b) op elkaar liggen. Strijk de vouw.

1. Fold the back, right sides together, match the boxpleat marks (5b). Iron the fold.

2. Naai de stof vast, vanaf de markering ongeveer 1 á 2 cm naar beneden.

2. Stitch, starting at the mark, approx 1 to 2 cm (3/8 to 6/8 inch) down, parrallel with the fold.

3. Vouw het achterpand open. Strijk de stolpplooi.

3. Lay out the back and iron the pleat.

4. Maak een horizontaal stiksel op zo'n 5 mm vanaf de kant, over de plooi.

4. Stitch a horizontal line, parrallel with the top of the back, approx 0,5 cm (1/8 inch) from the edge.

5. De stolpplooi is nu klaar. Volg de instructies voor het vastzetten van de schouderpas aan het achterpand. Het midden van de stolpplooi is nu middenachter. De markeringen die je bij 5a hebt gemaakt, komen overeen met de markeringen op de schouderpas.

5. The boxpleat is finished. Follow your pattern instructions for stitching the back yoke on the back. The center of the boxpleat is the center of the back, now. The marks you made at 5a are matching the marks on the back yoke.

[Tutorial] Kraag veranderen - Change the collar

Eerder heb ik de nieuwe blouse voor mijn dochter laten zien. Ik vertelde toen dat ik een aantal aanpassingen deed, waaronder het aanpassen van de kraag. In deze tutorial beschrijf ik hoe je een kraag veranderd. Vanaf de aanpassingen in het patroon, tot de eventuele aanpassingen in het naaiproces.

I showed my daughters new shirt earlier. I did mention I made some adjustments, including adjusting the collar. In this tutorial I describe how to change a collar. Starting with the adjustments in the pattern, ending with the adjustments in the sewing process.

Je kan de kraag op allerlei manieren veranderen. Houd met één ding altijd rekening: Verander de onderkant van de kraag nooit. Deze is getekend, zodat hij past op de staander (of op de hals, als er geen (losse) staander is). De breedte en vorm van de rest van de kraag kan je altijd aanpassen.
Ik maakte voor mijn Ethana shirt een ronde kraag. Dat deed ik door een ronde vorm, binnen de originele punt van de kraag, te tekenen (zie afbeelding hieronder, de rode lijn is de nieuwe punt).

It's possible to alter the collar in different ways. Just keep one thing in mind: Don't change the bottom of the collar. If you do so, it might not fit to the stand (or neck, if there isn't a (loose) stand). The width and shape of the collar can be changed. For my Etana shirt I made a round collar. Therefore I drew a round shape, inside the original tip of the collar (see picture above, the red line is the new tip).

Volg de stappen van je naaibeschrijving. Zet de kraag in elkaar, zoals beschreven wordt. Heb je een ronde kraag gemaakt, zoals ik hier deed, knip de rondingen dan bij met een kartelschaar of maak inkepingen, voor je de kraag keert.

Folow the steps in your sewing description. Put the collar together as described. If you made a round collar, like I did, trim the seamallowance with pinking shears or make notches, before turning the collar right side out. 

Zet de kraag aan je kledingstuk, zoals wordt beschreven in de patroonbeschrijving, en je bent klaar!

Sew your collar on your garment, as described in the sewing description. Admire your work, you're finished!
